Agriculture has been a crucible of evolutionary change ever since its inception thousands of years ago, and this change permeates agricultural endeavours at all levels of biological organisation, ranging from the individual gene through to whole communities. The Human Society built communities, raised cultures and continues to do so around the Agro‐Ecosystems, with the agricultural systems being adapted to local climates and the cultural landscape. As seen over the years, Farming and Agri practices were not isolated from the rest of the society’s culture. They influence, and are influenced by, other aspects such as the cultural landscape, food preferences, land tenure, family relationships and much more. Thus the Culture in Agriculture became a way of life worldwide and continues to do so.
The Cultural Landscape of our country arises from the harmonious combination of nature and human work, be it Urban, Rural or Rurban. Agricultural practises is more than a profession or a business in India also, it is India’s culture. It is the single most important livelihood of the masses in India and also the backbone of Indian Economy. The entire economic engine of our country is driven by its Agriculture and its Cultural landscapes. Agri & Culture, if properly managed, can be instrumental in enhancing social inclusion, improving quality of the environment, providing social cohesion and – on the economic side – stimulating tourism development, creating jobs and thus further enhancing investment climate of our country. It is a cyclic pattern, where each stakeholder is a major determinant to the other. The Economy and Brand and of any country is enhanced by Tourism, which in turn is driven by its Culture. Culture in turn affects the prevalent Agri‐systems and practices, which in turn impacts the environment of the country, thereby finally affecting its people and economy in turn.
Agriculture also has a deep influence on Indian Culture; with all major Indian festivals mainly being Agri based celebrations. Each state in India has a distinct Agri produce, practice and culture, which if channelized in the right manner provides ample opportunity of growth.
India needs to adopt a living, evolving system of human communities {Like Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems‐GIAHS by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)} in an intricate relationship with their territory, cultural or agricultural or biophysical landscape and wider social environment, with adaptability to new challenges, without losing their biological and cultural wealth and their productive capacity. These unique and additional income generating initiatives, adapted to existing agri & cultural practises would certainly increase income, tourism and work opportunities of our country, while simultaneously increasing the agri production of these states.
