The Tourism Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PHDCCI) organized the 2nd National Competition for Budding Managers (NCBM) with the theme ‘Role of Education & Skill Development in Tourism & Hospitality Industry’ on September 13, 2017 at 10.00 am at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi.
The objective of organizing the programme was to provide confidence in the management students so that they can create and strengthen a national ecosystem for sustainable development.
NCBM provided a unique platform to young budding managers to exhibit their talent and hone their presentation skills and thereby win recognition to excellence. The Competition also provided excellent opportunities to budding young managers of tomorrow to demonstrate their knowledge, creativity, experience, professional prowess to become ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’.
Welcoming the dignitaries on the occasion, Mr. Anil Khaitan, Senior Vice President, PHDCCI said that the real management is developing people through work. India’s business acumen is ranked very high across the globe. The budding Managers should play a participatory role to fuel our nation’s growth in all spheres.
Inaugural Session was graced by H.E. Mr. Radu Octavian Dobre, Ambassador, Embassy of Romania in the Republic of India; Mr. Sanjeev Roy, Senior Higher Education Expert- EU Public Diplomacy and Outreach in India and in the SAARC; Mr. Anil Khaitan, Senior Vice President, PHDCCI; Mr. Mukesh Gupta, Chairman Tourism Committee, PHDCCI; Mr. Rajan Sehgal, Co– Chairman- Tourism Committee, PHDCCI and Mr. Yogesh Srivastav, Principal Director, PHDCCI.
While inaugurating the programme, H.E. Mr. Radu Octavian Dobre, Ambassador, Embassy of Romania in the Republic of India, spoke about how delighted he is to be a part of such an endeavour where he got a chance to interact with young minds of one of the most progressing countries of the world. He said that programmes like these help create platforms and opportunities for professional managers at all levels to come together and enhance their professional competence and skills.
Mr. Mukesh Gupta, Chairman- Tourism Committee, PHDCCI, in his theme address highlighted as to how education & skill development can help boost the quality of tourism & hospitality industry in the country. He also quoted the example of his recent Bhutan visit where he was amused to see how the locals were happy to see them and always smiling. He emphasized on the fact to always smile, come what may.
Mr. Sanjeev Roy, Senior Higher Education Expert- EU Public Diplomacy and Outreach in India and in the SAARC, gave examples of countries like the UK, US and European Union, of how they include the skill development in the initial years of a student’s curriculum, so that they have extra set of skills which can help them to achieve their goals & eventually help in country’s growth.
Mr. Rajan Sehgal, Co–Chairman- Tourism Committee, PHDCCI, spoke in length about the hospitality industry & about the challenges faced by students when they join this industry. He also said that participating in such debates further refines and revalidates the budding manager’s information base and harnesses their presentation skills, which will be a big help in their career further.
The inaugural session was followed by the competition where all the participating teams gave a presentation in front of a high profile Jury for 10 minutes. This was followed by Q&A session with the Jury Members, based on which they were evaluated.
The distinguished panel of the jury included Mr. Rajan Sehgal, Co-Chairman- Tourism Committee, PHDCCI; Mr. Anil Parashar, President and CEO, Inter Globe Technology Quotient; Mr. Praveen Roy, CEO, Tourism & Hospitality Skill Council of India; Ms. Vasudha Sondhi, Managing Director, OM Tourism; Ms. Jyotsna Kapur, Secretary, All India Women’s Education Fund Association.
Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management, Greater Noida was adjudged the winner of the competition. KIIT School of Management, Bhubaneswar and Chitkara University, Patiala were the 1st and the 2nd Runners-Up respectively.
The three winning teams were awarded with a cash prize, trophies and certificates. Ms. Sakhi from the Tourism School, New Delhi was selected as the ‘Best Budding Manager’ of the country for the event among all the participants and was awarded with a Trophy and a certificate.
The Valedictory Session was graced by Mr. Manoj Tiwari, Member of Parliament- Lok Sabha and BJP President, Delhi; Mr. Gopal Jiwarajka, President, PHDCCI; Ms. Miniya Chatterji, Chief Sustainability Officer, Jindal Steel and Power Group of Companies; Mr. Kamal Singh, Executive Director & CEO, UN Global Compact Network India; Mr. Mukesh Gupta, Chairman- Tourism Committee, PHDCCI; Mr. Rajan Sehgal, Co–Chairman- Tourism Committee, PHDCCI; Mr. Saurabh Sanyal, Secretary General, PHDCCI; Mr. Yogesh Srivastav, Principal Director, PHDCCI.
Mr. Gopal Jiwarajka, President, PHDCCI in his welcome remarks said that PHDCCI offers a series of events of national importance; several of these have created a critical mass of leadership in the management calendar of the country and are eagerly awaited by the Industry and academia. One such initiative is NCBM, which is one of the cornerstones of PHDCCI’s mission to propagate professional excellence in the country.
Ms. Miniya Chatterji, Chief Sustainability Officer, Jindal Steel and Power Group of Companies spoke about the importance of skills in the education field. She also stated that whole world is looking up to India as the biggest resource as it is also one of the fastest growing economies in the world. She encouraged and advised the students to grab opportunities like the NCBM which can help them hone their skills.
Mr. Kamal Singh, Executive Director & CEO, UN Global Compact Network India, said that competitions like these are an opportunity for the students and budding managers to meet eminent industrialists and entrepreneurs from various sectors, both at the national and international level and gain a chance to build a network and also to be inspired by their success.
Inaugurating the valedictory session at NCBM, Mr. Manoj Tiwari, Member of Parliament- Lok Sabha & BJP President, Delhi exhorted all stakeholders to execute all initiatives which either the Government or the Corporate Sector undertakes, to give a push to the Indian Tourism and Hospitality Industry. He also lauded PHD‘s efforts to create such platforms for the young minds to get inspired and always strive for excellence.
Mr. Saurabh Sanyal, Secretary General, PHDCCI, delivered the formal vote of thanks, where he expressed his gratitude to the eminent dignitaries and the industry experts on the dais.
The programme was supported by Reliance Industries Ltd and attended by more than 150 delegates from the allied institutes including management & hospitality institutes.
The 2nd edition of NCBM 2017 received an overwhelming response in terms of participation by teams. This programme will be one of the foremost and hugely popular pan-India national-level competitions meant exclusively for the Budding Managers in the years to come.
